I santuari sono mete dove lo spirito devozionale è molto intenso e dove grande è l’affluenza dei visitatori.
Tra questi assume rilievo sulla strada che si snoda lungo la via dei laghi verso Rocca di Papa il santuario della Madonna del Tufo che si pensa sia stata costruita all'inizio del Cinquecento; per la prima volta,( e di ciò si fa menzione in un decreto del cardinale Gallo, della diocesi di Frascati, del 25 settembre 1592)
Le origini del santuario della Madonna del Tufo, come tramanda la tradizione, risalgono ad un fatto avvenuto nel 1490: dal Monte Cavo, si staccò un masso del peso di 150 quintali, che stava per investire un viandante. Questi pregò la Vergine Maria che gli salvasse la vita, e il masso si arrestò all'istante, senza colpirlo. L'uomo, in segno di ringraziamento, fece costruire una chiesa di piccole dimensioni, nella quale fu posto il grande masso, su cui il pittore Antoniazzo Romano dipinse l'immagine della Madonna.
Il dipinto, durante un restauro, purtroppo venne in parte rovinato per via di un pittore alquanto inesperto. Poi avvennero altri restauri. La chiesa venne ristrutturata diverse volte e nel corso del ventesimo secolo venne ricostruita ex novo grazie al contributo del progetto di Salvatore Spadano
E’ dunque un Santuario che si distingue per la sua storia e per la sua semplicità nel bellissimo territorio dei Castelli Romani e che merita la dovuta attenzione da parte di tutti.
E’ sufficiente una gita domenicale provenendo da Roma per soffermarsi un po' di tempo nel Santuario, andando poi, e non è da trascurare, in una delle tante trattorie e "fraschette" del luogo per il pranzo.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Tufo
The sanctuaries are places where the spirit of devotion is very intense and where is the great afinflux of visitors.
Among these is relevant on the road that goes along the “Via dei Laghi” to Rocca di Papa, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Tufo, which is believed to have been built in the early sixteenth century, for the first time (and this is mentioned in a Order of Cardinal Gallo, of the Diocese of Frascati, 25 September 1592)
The origins of the shrine of the Madonna del Tufo, as handed down the tradition, was an event occurring in 1490: from Monte Cavo, fell off a rock weighing 150 tons investing a wanderer. He prayed to the Virgin Mary that saved his life, and the rock stopped instantly, without hitting him.
The man, in sign of gratitude, built a small church, and inside was placed the great stone on which the painter Antoniazzo Romano painted the image of the Madonna.
The painting, during a restoration, unfortunately, was partially destroyed by a rather inexperienced painter. Then further restoration took place. The church was rebuilt several times during the twentieth century and was rebuilt from scratch with the help of the draft Salvatore Spada
It is therefore a shrine peculiar for its history and its beautiful simplicity in the territory of the Castelli Romani and deserves due attention by all.
