Sant'Antimo shining example of Cluny architectureYou walk through the door of the abbey and you are immediately enchanted by the architectural simplicity of the interior.
We are in Sant’ Antimo in Tuscany, a monastic complex located in Castelnuovo (Siena), in the town of Montalcino, dedicated to Antimo a deacon martyred in Arezzo probably with San Donato in 352.
The abbey has a long history.

In 770 the Lombards charged the abbot Tao Pistoia starting construction of a Benedictine monastery and also entrusted the management of state property in the area.
In 1118 he started at the time of Count Bernardo Ardendeschi of building the new church under the guidance of the Guidon.
Abbeys were used at that time as a stop for pilgrims to Rome, merchants, soldiers and kings
.Carlo Magno, on his return from Rome nell'781, retracing the great path created by the Lombards, later called "Francigena" why "road originated by the Franks, came to St. Antimo and put his seal on the foundation of the monastery.
The Italian abbey has not the typical characteristics of French Cistercian footprint, but, exceptionally for Italy, its architectural landmark is inspired to the Abbey of Cluny: there is in the ambulatory component of French style found in Italy only Sant'Antimo and other Italian cathedrals such as those Acerenza and Aversa( Campania).
The altar stone is composed of a base in the shape of a parallelepiped completely devoid of decorations on which rests a marble slab. Behind the altar is one of the most beautiful and precious works kept in the temple, the great medieval crucifix, a magnificent representation of Christ on the Cross,.
The church faces west with a beautiful carved lintel depicting a plant lives.

No less remarkable is the fact that today the Abbey of Saint Antimo is bound by canons regular French inspired by the rule of St. Augustine.

Every day the community gathers in the church to celebrate the functions dictated by the monastic rule and all functions are sung in Gregorian chant and in the original Latin.
This is a further element of diversification of this abbey of exceptional beauty.

The famous neapolitan song composed in 1980 byLuigi Denza is known worldwide
Jammo, Jammo, 'ncoppa, Jammo ja', funiculì, funiculà!
Here we do not speak about the famous song that was sung at the festival Piedigrotta, but only about the reasons for which Luigi Denza composed Funiculì funiculà.
The song had to turn tourists and Neapolitans themselves to advertise the funicular as a new and daring means of transport. We must not forget that before the advent of cable car ascent to Vesuvius was possible only on foot or through the use of mules and porters.
The funicular was a drive system, advanced for its time, that allowed so many tourists from 1880 to 1944 (year of the last eruption during which the funicular was completely destroyed), to visit and watch closely active voulcanos..
For the record the Vesuvius funicular was replaced by chairlift Vesuvius, running from 1953 to 1984.
In short, the Vesuvius funicular is another example with the railway Portici- Naples city t showing us that Naples VIII and XIX centuries were technological forefront in the transport sector
Naples is not only beautiful in terms of landscape and artistic, but it is also the cradle of enlightened ideas since the time of Bourbon kingdom

Walking in Rome in the footsteps of Stendhal

There is always great difficulty in reporting routes and curiosity of Rome that are not already been the subject of attention in books and guides published in all languages.
So let us walk the city with the help of Stendhal, author of roman walks in which are described the famous beauties of the eternal city
Stendhal recommends inter alia the visit of twenty-four of the most remarkable churches of Rome eighty-six citing other equally deserving.
He classifies the Roman churches in four groups according to their shapes : the basilica which the general plan resembles the shape of a "paper game" round like the Pantheon, the Latin cross that the shape of a crucifix lying on the ground and the Greek cross, as St. Agnes.
He comments also in excellent way the Imperial Forum, with fine details including the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, who "has the honor to give the traveler an idea perfectly outlined in an ancient temple" He considers the Pantheon "the best of rest 'Roman antiquity "which tells the fascinating "epopea" to finally go to the Trevi Fountain that" has a great body. "
These are just some examples mentioned by the French writer who used to say
“We get bored sometimes in Rome on the second month, but never the sixth, and if we t remain until the twelfth,we are taken by the idea of establishing themselves.”
It would be great to walk to Rome with a special retrospective valuable as that of Stendhal visit the city it would be immensely enriched.
Try yo visit Rome reading the "Roman walks!

The railway Napoli-Portici

When we speak of Naples, the thought goes right to the bay enchanted to the ancient churches with valuable works of art, to the history of Naples by Swabians to Angevin, Aragonese to the Bourbons and monuments. And yet the wonderful people, its traditions, its rituals sacred and profane.
Only a few connoisseurs of Naples devote attention to the fact that this city has for years been at the forefront in transport.
The reference is to train Napoli - Portici, the first railway built in Italy. It opened with great celebration, October 3, 1839 and had a length of just 7.25 km. Historical sources report that the departure of the first train was at
the presence of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon and of the highest dignitaries of the Kingdom. The route was completed in nine and a half minutes between the wings of people surprised and jubilant. The locomotive pulling the train was called "Vesuvius".
In the first trip were transported 258 passengers. Over the next forty days well 85,759 passengers have the benefit of rail.
The court painter Salvatore Fergola immortalized the event in his famous paintings.
Many years after the so-called cable cars were built in Naples, needed to move on a very hilly area and in particular from the center of Naples to Vomero hill.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Tufo

The sanctuaries are places where the spirit of devotion is very intense and where is the great afinflux of visitors.
Among these is relevant on the road that goes along the “Via dei Laghi” to Rocca di Papa, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Tufo, which is believed to have been built in the early sixteenth century, for the first time (and this is mentioned in a Order of Cardinal Gallo, of the Diocese of Frascati, 25 September 1592)
The origins of the shrine of the Madonna del Tufo, as handed down the tradition, was an event occurring in 1490: from Monte Cavo, fell off a rock weighing 150 tons investing a wanderer. He prayed to the Virgin Mary that saved his life, and the rock stopped instantly, without hitting him.
The man, in sign of gratitude, built a small church, and inside was placed the great stone on which the painter Antoniazzo Romano painted the image of the Madonna.
The painting, during a restoration, unfortunately, was partially destroyed by a rather inexperienced painter. Then further restoration took place. The church was rebuilt several times during the twentieth century and was rebuilt from scratch with the help of the draft Salvatore Spada
It is therefore a shrine peculiar for its history and its beautiful simplicity in the territory of the Castelli Romani and deserves due attention by all.
It is sufficientt a Sunday trip from Rome to reach in a few time in the sanctuary,
After the visit you can go also for the lunch to the many restaurants and fraschette of the place.

Torbole on Garda Lake:preferred place of Goethe

Torbole, an enchanted place in the Province of Trento, is situated in the north east of the Garda lake in a flat area which includes the mouth of the Sarca river tributary of the lake.
Not only was immortalized by Dante but also by Wolfgang Goethe who said in his Tagensbuch:
With that yearning I want my friends are here with me a moment, to enjoy the view that lies before me!
From the nineteenth century many young painters and poets on the Grand Tour were in Torbole, attracted by enthusiastic descriptions of Goethe who stayed here.
Torbole, beginning of the twentieth century ,became a destination for many artists (mostly German-speaking), direct to the school of the painter Hans Lietzmann Berlin (1872-1955), who moved here in 1899.
Until the 1960 remained in Torboleactive the Kaldor family in Beust House.. .
The town of Torbole, also known as the Capital of the Wind ", thanks to 'Ora” wind that blows from the south, has the houses set in an amphitheater and grouped around the picturesque harbour preserving the original appearance of the small village of fishermen.
In Torbole harbor the goods came from the north and then spread to the Adige Valley through the ancient road that climbs to the valley of St. Lucia. In this way, in 143arrived the” galere “of Venice which in Torbole lake victoriously faced those of the Duchy of Milan. During the Venetian rule (1439-1509) the port of Torbole assumed a particular military and commercialimportance and you can see on the wharf the "dazio" a small building built on the orders of 'Empress Maria Theresa.
On the side you will see a marble bas-relief depicting the Venetian expedition.
A little farther on the west side, is visible Casa Beust "the nineteenth-century residence of the German noble family von Beust.
The facade is decorated with a painting by Hans Lietzmann depicting Sant 'Antonio of Padua preaches to the fish. The most characteristic street of the village square is Segantini that retains much charm: colorful houses for irregular courtyards, porches, external stairs decorated with flowers.

Torbole is well worth seeing and staying at least a few hours is really refreshing spirit.
